Under re-examination by Kate Blackwell QC, prosecuting, the jury were told the contents of some of the Whats App messages exchanged between Johnson and his accuser.

Johnson told her that he wanted to meet up specially to give her a signed Sunderland shirt rather than at a football match, saying that he would "prefer no one to see".

As it emerged in court that the schoolgirl's mother is a family friend of Johnson, the girl was asked by defence barrister Orlando Pownall QC whether or not she was still trying to protect the 28-year-old footballer.

Appearing in court by video-link, the girl became upset and tearful as she said: "No, because he did nothing to protect me and he made me out to be a liar." However, Mr Pownall QC later accused the schoolgirl of being "sly" and "making it up as you go along" as she repeatedly broke down in tears during cross-examination.

Mr Pownall told the court that the girl's mother had urged her to be cautious about Johnson, saying: "Don't go stalking him now." The jury heard how the girl had described Johnson as "creepy" to her friends when she had first started talking to the footballer.
